The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have given the green light to carriers such as Verizon and T-Mobile to block unwanted robocalls by default to all customers. They believe this can reduce the number of harassment calls received by phone users.
Speaking to USA Today, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said "If there is one thing in our country today that unites Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives, socialists and libertarians, vegetarians and carnivores, it is that they are sick and tired of being bombarded by unwanted robocalls."
Robocalls are suspicious phone calls with prerecorded messages that people receive that can show up on caller ID. These calls have continued to rise in recent years because technology has made it cheap and easy for scammers to hide their identity and make phone calls from anywhere in the world.
According to industry research, Americans receive a staggering 5 billion (yes 5 billion robocalls per month but you can expect this number to decrease thanks to the introduction of new regulations.
